Henri de Tonti (1650-1704) was the French explorer who founded Arkansas Post, 1686. This painting is a copy by Ben Brantly of an original painting by Dutch artist, Nicolas Maes (1634-1693). The painting was property of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in Arkansas in 1935.

Henri de Tonti was an Italian-born soldier, explorer, and fur trader in the service of France. Born near Gaeta, Italy, he joined the French army in 1668 and later served in the French navy. Tonti lost his right hand in a grenade explosion during the Sicilian wars and from that time on wore a prosthetic hook covered by a glove.
